Mayfair global precedent
The ruling that Mayfair 101 engaged in false online advertising breaks new ground, after reporting by The Australian Financial Review that first questioned Mayfair’s investment product spruiking.
The Federal Court has broken new legal ground in ruling that fund promoter Mayfair 101 engaged in false advertising by targeting investors who used Google search engine terms such as “best term deposit”.
Of course, investors who Mayfair paid Google to direct to its website were enticed by seemingly attractive investment options that in truth were far more risky than deposits offered by a bank and covered by the federal government’s bank deposit protection scheme.
