‘Mathematically challenged’: States’ spat over GST gets personal

State and territory treasurers have rejected a radical proposal from NSW Premier Chris Minns to carve up the GST on a per-person basis, with only Western Australia offering its support to a policy that would give billions in extra revenue to the larger states.

On Thursday, Mr Minns proposed abandoning the long-held principle that richer states should prop up poorer ones after the Commonwealth Grants Commission announced on Tuesday that NSW’s GST allocation would be cut by $188 million in 2025.
