Howard backs free trade and fossil fuels in Trump era

Trade experts doubt a 20-year free trade agreement between Australia and the US will influence Donald Trump’s decision on tariffs, as former prime minister John Howard warns against a lurch to costly protectionism during his second term in the White House.

Mr Howard argued that global free trade had lifted millions of people out of poverty, saying Australian coal and gas were vital to China’s rise, while questioning the pursuit of net zero carbon emissions.
