Four-year terms to end short-termism
Federal parliamentary terms of four or more years would put Australia in line with many countries, and give future federal governments more precious political space.
New Business Council of Australia president Geoff Culbert pushed the idea at The Australian Financial Review Business Summit of four-year terms for federal parliament to “break out of the jail of short-term thinking” in Australian politics.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has twice this year reacted to speculation on election timing by saying if it were up to him, the terms would be longer than the long-standing three years.
