After protracted resistance, Daniel Andrews has finally been persuaded to adopt a targeted lockdown in 10 postcode hotspots in Melbourne, covering dozens of suburbs for four weeks from midnight on Wednesday.

The announcement will be publicly welcomed by the Morrison government, which has been urging this course, increasingly vocally of late, on a reluctant state government for nearly two weeks.
