Amid the chaos, Scott Morrison must still think ahead

The mood in the governing Coalition is unusually volatile in the run-up to the election. The best cure would be to have some policy to talk about.

Scott Morrison enters this election season as the first prime minister to survive an entire three-year term since John Howard, four prime ministers ago. Yet as the anniversary of Mr Howard’s 2007 defeat passed this week, the party unity and discipline that’s been Mr Morrison’s biggest political asset has begun fraying with unexpected ferocity. Seven MPs have crossed the floor, with another week of sittings to go.
