Sydney’s opening night of the smash hit Broadway musical Hamilton revealed an extraordinary production showcasing brilliant local actors, singers and dancers from more than a dozen ethnic backgrounds, including Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander and Maori heritage.
Hamilton reimagines America’s founding story by replacing dead, white founding fathers and their families with people of colour, played – in the original US production – primarily by black and latino performers. However, the bigger message here is about more than “diversity”.
