No votes in trying to whip up fracking fears

The green left is taking its lead from stars famous for playing fictional characters, or from the fictional fears pushed by coal seam gas activists. But the voters aren't listening.

There was a time when left-wing politics involved serious arguments for social change, supported by detail policy work. But now, in the age of Twitter and mummy blogging, a new kind of leftist has emerged.

No longer burdened by the need to think and write seriously, they associate themselves with the aura of celebrity. People who have made their names in the entertainment and gossip industries have become political cult figures, especially when commanding a microphone at protest rallies.
