At 5.13pm Tuesday, Mathias Cormann texted one of Malcolm Turnbull's senior advisers to say he would try to shut down Peter Dutton's looming challenge.
The Finance Minister advised he would use his regular walk with Dutton at 5.30am Wednesday to try to talk him down.
