Energy policy is high stakes for Coalition and Labor

Kevin Rudd's inability to secure the passage of the carbon pollution reduction scheme in late 2009 precipitated his and Labor's poll collapse, which resulted in Julia Gillard mounting the leadership coup in June 2010 and splintering the party for years afterwards.
