In the late 1990s, Ashley Lester, then a Sydney University graduate, was working at the Reserve Bank as a US analyst.

He was deep in research, looking into how the rush to cash-in on internet-based stocks in the US had driven share prices to sky-high valuations. He was tasked with modelling what might happen if that phenomenon reversed.
