Gold breaks through $US3000 as Trump turbocharges rally

New York | Gold prices passed $US3000 an ounce for the first time ever, driven higher by a central bank buying spree, economic fragility worldwide, and US President Donald Trump’s attempts to rewrite the rules of global trade by imposing tariffs on allies and strategic rivals.

Bullion climbed as much as 0.5 per cent to $US3004.94 an ounce on Friday before erasing gains.
