Israel must listen to its friends, not defy them
Israel has to show that it is better than the terrorists of Hamas. That means being accountable for its own behaviour.
No nation in the world is more hardline about taking care of its own security than Israel, for profound historic reasons. But Israel needs friends right now, not intransigence. The large scale of Palestinian deaths and the absence of any post-conflict plan for 2 million homeless Gazans facing famine, was already stretching patience among Israel’s allies.
The deaths of seven foreign aid workers this week in the most dubious of circumstances, including Australian Zomi Frankcom, has brought Israel as close as it’s ever been to an ultimatum from Washington.
