Voters reject Indigenous Voice in heavy defeat

Anthony Albanese has accepted responsibility for the crushing defeat of the Indigenous Voice to parliament referendum proposal, while blaming a lack of bipartisanship support for Saturday’s historic rout.

Voters resoundingly rejected the proposal to recognise Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the Australian Constitution, with the ACT the only jurisdiction to deliver a majority Yes vote. The Voice also fell well short of the national majority required for a referendum to pass.
