US speaker’s ouster plunges Congress into turmoil

Washington | House of Representatives Speaker Kevin McCarthy was voted out of the top job for the first time in US history on Tuesday (Wednesday AEDT) after one of his own party members teamed with Democrats to dethrone him.

The move plunged Congress into an internal power struggle as it faces key deadlines on avoiding a government shutdown and approving aid for Ukraine, and as the country hurtles towards the presidential election.
