Grog bans to tackle ‘urgent challenges’ facing Alice Springs

The federal and Northern Territory governments will consider tough new alcohol restrictions for remote communities including Alice Springs, with a newly appointed regional controller to advise Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on the deteriorating law and order situation by February 1.

Mr Albanese bowed to political pressure and flew to Alice Springs on Tuesday, as the politics of Labor’s Voice to parliament proposal were clouded by calls for urgent action to stabilise public safety and deal with alcohol-fuelled violence and crime in the town.
