Stalled outside two big Ukrainian cities, Russia adjusts tactics

By attacking Kharkiv’s Freedom Square and blowing up a Kyiv TV tower, Russian forces demonstrated they can strike across the country at will.

Russian missile attacks on Tuesday on a television broadcast tower in Kyiv and one of the main government administration buildings in Kharkiv appear to be an adjustment in tactics after limited ground incursions into the cities stalled.

Live-cam footage showed a large explosion in Kharkiv’s central Freedom Square in the morning. Seven people died, the Ukraine government said, although the timing, location and visibility of the attack suggested it was designed to demonstrate that Russian forces can strike across the country at will.
