Immigration a dilemma for government
Reopening the border to migrants, students and tourist is a positive. But the government doesn’t want an ambitious return of migration to spook a population still emerging from the pandemic.
Australia’s international border opens next Wednesday, but the federal government still faces an immigration dilemma. Nearly two years after Australia pulled up the drawbridge, the economy needs more people in the country to help build the platform for a new phase of prosperity.
But nor does the government want anything that appears like an ambitious return of migration to spook a population still emerging from pandemic and lockdowns.
