Understanding the 19-year high in unemployment

Australia's unemployment rate jumped to 7.1 per cent in May – its highest since October 2001 – but it would have been 11.3 per cent if everyone who lost their job was now out looking for work.
The economy shed 227,700 jobs in May and over the past two months 835,000 people have lost their jobs due to the COVID-19 shutdown.
