Michael Hill shuts stores as other retailers seek exemptions

Non-food retailers are attempting to avoid having to close stores by claiming to offer goods and services essential to customers during the coronavirus pandemic.
On Tuesday, jewellery chain Michael Hill became the first non-food retailer to voluntarily close its Australian stores for an indefinite period. This followed store closures in Canada earlier this week and in New Zealand on Monday as the country locked down all but essential services.
