Pro-democracy candidates secure landslide win in Hong Kong elections
Shanghai | Pro-democracy candidates have secured a landslide win in Hong Kong’s local government elections, after a record number of residents turned out to voice their opposition to creeping Chinese influence in the city after five months of protests.
The result, which gives politicians opposed to Beijing unprecedented control over community-level government, is expected to embolden a protest movement pushing for greater democracy under a system where the city's leader is hand-picked by China.
