Former defence and foreign affairs minister Stephen Smith says the drone attacks on Saudi Arabia are a wake-up call for Australia and a harbinger of modern-day threats to vital infrastructure.

Mr Smith was speaking after one-time US director of national intelligence James Clapper joined him on the board of a Perth-based cyber security firm specialising in infrastructure and data protection.
