Peter Dutton and his supporters were racing Wednesday night to try and force a leadership spill by Thursday, before Parliament rises for a fortnight and momentum is lost.

Mr Dutton's charge stalled earlier in the day over questions about his eligibility to sit in Parliament and internal and external criticism of an expensive promise to exclude power bills from the GST.
