I’m a sucker for a 16th-century Spanish garrison town, and the old part of Puerto Rican capital San Juan does not disappoint. Established in 1521, it’s the oldest European-founded city in the Americas.
Guarding the north-eastern entrance to the country’s main port, old San Juan is a colonial gem, reminiscent of Cádiz in Spain and La Habana, Cuba, before communism and then the West’s opprobrium sent the latter into permanent decline.
