It is a well-known fact that cycling long distance is a meditative experience that clears clutter from the mind and allows profound insight into universal truths.
Having taken two very different trips by bike in the space of two weeks, here’s my contribution to the greater wealth of cycling lore: the enjoyment derived from a bicycle tour is determined by four key factors – favourable weather, a reliable steed, an inspiring setting and, finally, cars (preferably a complete absence of them).
