University of Queensland researchers say they are close behind the three leading candidates for a COVID-19 vaccine that have emerged from the United States, the United Kingdom and China.

The escalating global race for a vaccine comes as the death of 93-year-old Alice Bacon, who was a resident of the Newmarch House aged care facility in NSW, brought the total number of coronavirus-related deaths in NSW to 47 and to 100 nationally.
