Pundits predicted the return of roaring twenties-style extravagance at Australian Fashion Week but emerging designers served up austerity in the form of pared back suiting.

On Wednesday, Esse Studios made its debut at fashion week with a show at Bennelong restaurant at the Opera House. Designer Charlotte Hicks showed a refined collection primarily in black and white, where tailoring was the headline act.
