So far, Australia’s fashion sensibilities have predominantly been the product of a singular sun-and-sand culture. Even in the elegant work of the late Carla Zampatti, the fantasy of Romance Was Born or the relaxed modernity that defines Kym Ellery, it has borne the baggage of an archetypical Bondi lifestyle like a favourite accessory.
But a new wave of multicultural creativity is building, thanks to designers such as Mariam Seddiq, Yousef Akbar and Daniel Avakian, whose codes and references are informed by heritages that could not be further removed from Sydney’s eastern suburbs.
