Discarded plastic is swarming out of our oceans onto the catwalks of Paris and the faces of cool kids across the planet.

For her latest haute couture collection, experimental Dutch designer Iris van Herpen created five garments made from upcycled marine debris – the plastic bottles and wrappers, drinking straws and prophylactics that spin in five gyres in the world’s oceans; whirlpools estimated to suck in 8 million metric tons of plastic waste each year.
