The contemporary furniture commenting on history

The latest project by Melbourne design studio Broached Commissions brings a modernist sensibility to the Victorian era as it explores the complexity and contradictions of shifting taste.

The storage units in Broached Recall are composed of horizontal layers of alternating vintage veneer and new timber composites. 

Spiky floor lamps created from thousands of hand-dyed toothpicks? Broached Commissions. A serpentine chaise longue conjured from knobby strips of hand-loomed leather? Broached, again. If you come across a wardrobe composed of polished brass scales that glimmer as you pass by, that’ll be Broached Commissions, too.

Since launching a decade ago, the Melbourne-based studio under the creative direction of Lou Weis has employed research-driven narrative strategies to produce limited-edition pieces that are not just formally radical but also conceptually compelling.
