New Bahru is the latest project to boost Singapore’s reputation as one of the most liveable cities in Asia. Opened in stages since May 2024, the precinct is the home of 40 independent businesses offering food and beverage, health and wellness, retail and the arts, set within a four-storey U-shaped structure enclosing a shady lawn. The site was a former high school designed in mid-century tropical modern style – think pure Bauhaus lines offset with airy arches and breezeblock walkways for cross ventilation.

“You can spend a day meandering around, discovering something meaningful,” reckons Wee Teng Wen, managing partner of the developer, The Lo & Behold Group.
