Meet the woman who saved the Sydney Harbour Bridge
If you haven’t yet heard of Kathleen Butler, chances are you will as The Coathanger marks its 90th anniversary this weekend.
One hundred years ago this month, John Bradfield, one of Australia’s most famous engineers, embarked on an overseas mission looking for a foreign firm to help construct the largest and most expensive building project yet attempted in the still newly formed federation.
Bradfield had been working on the audacious project to build a monumental bridge over Sydney harbour, alongside a city metro network, since he proposed it in 1912. But World War I had intervened.
