World’s top sailors out to smash SailGP record on Sydney Harbour

The pinnacle so far is 99.9 km/h (in heavy winds in France). Australian team driver Tom Slingsby thinks home just might be the place to break through 100 km\h.

SailGP returns to Sydney Harbour next weekend. Ten super-fast, foiling catamarans will compete in the Australia Sail Grand Prix over two days, as part of a global championship modelled very much on Formula 1.

Key differences between the race and F1, organisers argue (other than the obvious fact of being on water), are that SailGP’s 50-foot catamarans are powered by nature, not petrol; they are identical in specification to avoid any equipment advantage; and they carry the flags of different nations.
