The BMW iX3 is whisper quiet (but oh, what a price tag)
You’ll have to pay $114,900 for the electric newcomer, versus $73,900 for the two-litre petrol X3 hatch. There’s good news too, though.
Take your best selling model (the compact-ish X3 hatch), add a sophisticated electric drivetrain, a new grille and some flashy blue highlights. Make it as close to the petrol car in every other sense, so anyone can jump in and feel at home, and keep the premium as low as possible by having just one electric motor and two-wheel drive.
That’s the formula, and how sales progress over the rest of the year – once supply improves and pent-up demand is fulfilled – will tell us whether it’s a long-term winner.
