Your next car may well be a PHEV, or plug-in hybrid electric vehicle. It’s not a particularly attractive name but the term is needed to distinguish it from other electrified vehicles on sale. These include the HEV (hybrid electric vehicle, which cannot be charged from an external source) and the BEV (a pure battery electric vehicle).
A PHEV, commonly pronounced "fev", promises the advantages of both petrol and electric drivetrains. This means you can drive silently and emissions-free to work and back during the week, charging at home each night, then use the conventional piston engine for long-distance driving on the weekend.
