Like most of the country’s major cultural institutions, the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra long ago embraced the politics of its teal-voting, progressive upper-middle-class audience.

In 2021, the program for the MSO’s recording of The Environmental Symphony, narrated by Sir Richard Branson, declared the purpose of the symphony was to add “some musical muscle to the ongoing political and environmental fight against climate change”.
