The Japanese artist redefining womanhood one brushstroke at a time

Amid the ghosts and ghouls in the Art Gallery of NSW's summer blockbuster, the haunting work of Fuyuko Matsui stands out.

Getting trapped in the dark with ghost paintings isn’t a typical childhood punishment – but that’s what Japanese artist Fuyuko Matsui faced when she was in trouble. So it is fitting that her work will have a room of its own at Japan supernatural, the Art Gallery of NSW's blockbuster summer show showcasing three centuries of Japanese art inspired by the spirit world.

The exhibition, part of the gallery’s 2019-2020 Sydney International Art Series, opens this weekend.
