In Australia, she is all but unheard of. Jessica Hayllar grew up quietly in the English countryside and, along with three of her sisters, underwent meticulous art training from her artist father, James.
Between 1880 and 1915 Hayllar exhibited her paintings at the Royal Academy of Arts in London, where her work hung “on the line” – a mark of prestige meaning visitors could see her work at eye level on the crowded wall.
