See inside Michelangelo’s ‘secret’ Florence room
In 1530, when the Medici family returned to power in the city, the artist went into hiding. He spent his days drawing on the walls of his tiny refuge, and you can now view the artworks for yourself.
It sounds like a medieval mystery. Under a famous chapel in the heart of Florence, down a few stone steps beyond a wooden trapdoor, lies a secret room.
Hidden within the room is a treasure trove of sketches by the Renaissance artist, Michelangelo Buonarroti, who is believed to have sought refuge here from a wrathful pope nearly 500 years ago.
