Well before the hordes surged forward to hear the chairman of the Art Gallery of NSW, David Gonski, announce the winner of the Archibald Prize, all bets were on John Olsen's self-portrait. And they were right.

It was the second time Olsen, 77, had entered Australia's most prestigious portraiture prize he believes he lost in 1989 by one vote and he was chuffed.
