Almost half the lots in Bonhams’ Important Australian Art sale failed to find new homes on Tuesday night, perhaps reflecting fiscal hangovers after last week’s multimillion dollar spending spree at the Sydney Contemporary art fair.

Nevertheless, the half-million dollars paid for the star of the Bonhams catalogue, along with eager bidding for numerous other works, lifted the mood in the auctioneer’s Sydney rooms.
