It is towards the end of our lunch date that Peter Nash leans ­forward on the table. His elbows replacing a recently departed main plate, we launch into what feels like the true ­substance of our conversation. Over a three-course set menu at Ezard we have already traversed a career arc that has seen Nash lead the audit of two of the nation’s biggest companies ­BHP Billiton and the Australia and New ­Zealand Banking Group. He is now in the role of ­Australian chairman of global ­powerhouse KPMG.

We have pulled apart politics and global economics. Now Nash is talking about the difficulties facing Aboriginal Australians.
