Flouting COVID-19 restrictions to provide content proved a bad idea for some desperate social media personalities in often-idyllic surroundings.

Two influencers, Josh Paler Lin and Leia Se, were deported from Bali after flouting local COVID-19 restrictions by painting on a face mask instead of wearing one in a public setting.  

Desperate for viral content and the income it brings, social media influencers are finding themselves on the wrong side of the law for sharing content in which they break COVID-19 health and safety protocols, or post material that is insensitive at a time when millions face financial ruin.

In some cases, the two slights go hand-in-hand – and at the epicentre of this phenomenon is former influencer-haven Bali.
