Barbie, Mario Bros spike a product movie boom

The superheroes are fading. After more than a decade of Marvel movies, oversaturation has made the franchise’s flaws unbearably obvious to a jaded audience. But it seems Hollywood has an answer for the next phase of blockbuster entertainment: the product movie.

This year’s cinematic titan was Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, which made more than $US1 billion ($1.5 billion) worldwide.
