Tension at Opera Australia between artistic ambition and commercial reality, which led to the shock departure of artistic director Jo Davies last month, is evident in a 2025 season with a record four musicals programmed.

Australia’s largest performing arts company launched its 2025 season on Tuesday without the person most responsible for it. Chief executive Fiona Allan stood in for Ms Davies at an interview with The Australian Financial Review inside OA’s Sydney headquarters last week.
