William Barton might be best known for playing didgeridoo, but the First Nations composer’s piece to reopen the Sydney Opera House Concert Hall will feature everything but the kitchen sink.

Commissioned by the Sydney Symphony Orchestra’s new chief conductor, Simone Young, the piece Barton is writing for the SSO’s first concerts in its new home next July will include clap sticks made of wood salvaged from the floor of the old Concert Hall, before it was closed for refurbishment in January 2020.
