Newcrest buys 30pc of PNG joint venture
Newcrest Mining (NCM) Australia's largest gold company has acquired its initial stake in a joint venture with South Africa's Harmony Gold Mining in Papua New Guinea. Newcrest has paid $US230 million ($253 million) for the 30.01 per cent interest in the Morobe Mining Joint Ventures in the country's Morobe province. The joint venture's assets include the Hidden Valley gold mine, the prospective Wafi Colpu copper/gold deposit and exploration tenements. The company said it would increase its stake in the joint venture to 50 per cent by funding all project expenditure until the date of first production from the Hidden Valley mine, which is scheduled to open in mid-2009. Shares in Newcrest finished at $26.40 on Friday, up 4.7 per cent for the day. Giralia Resources (GIR) High-grade hematite results have been reported at the junior explorer's Daltons iron ore joint venture, as well as the company's wholly owned McPhee Creek project in Western Australia's Pilbara region. The results are good news for the Perth-based company and its partner, Haoma Mining, which owns the remaining 25 per cent in the Daltons joint venture. Giralia said the most significant result was a zone of strong hematite enrichment in the east of the joint venture area, where average iron grades exceed 63 per cent iron. Giralia's shares closed unchanged on Friday at $1.45. Berkeley Resources (BKY) The uranium hopeful has announced a maiden inferred resource estimate at its Spanish Gambuta deposit of 9.23 million pounds. The deposit is located in Caceres province, 165 kilometres south-west of Madrid. The next round of drilling is due at the end of the high-risk fire season, which the company expects to be in early October. Shares in Berkeley gained 5.7 per cent on Friday to close at 74¢.
