Labor has handed Regional Express an $80 million lifeline despite rebuffing offers from smaller carriers to take over the collapsed company’s routes, and after administrators rejected bids to acquire the airline’s operations.

The funding from the federal government came on the same day as competition regulators said airfares had spiked since the collapse of Regional Express, better known as Rex, in July.
