The Sydney-based Oatley family haven't been able to get to their $1400-a-night north Queensland resort Qualia on Hamilton Island since February.

A 1.5 hour flight further north to the Coral Sea, Lizard Island Resort has been bleeding around $150,000 a day for nine weeks now on its empty 40 suites, including the $6500-a-night The Villa.
