The Morrison government is considering the evacuation of hundreds of Australian citizens stranded in South America after countries closed their borders to stop the spread of the coronavirus.

While thousands of Australians frantically flew home before the borders are effectively closed from midnight Friday, other travellers – from young backpackers to retirees – have been struggling to get out of countries that have also clamped down on cross-border movements.
